The aging individual must get used to the many changes their body goes through. Your dental health can be at risk as you age if you are not keeping up with your regular dental exams or practicing good oral hygiene. Receding gums are common among older adults, however, gums can begin to recede for other reasons as well. At Shale Smiles, we treat receding gums to help your mouth stay as healthy as possible.

When they are healthy, your gums completely cover the roots of your teeth. Receding gums expose a portion of the tooth root. This is also known as gingival recession and is most commonly found in individuals over 65 years of age. In fact, approximately 90% of people in this age group have gingival recession. This condition can happen to many teeth in the mouth or only one or two.

Gingival recession poses a problem in that it exposes the tooth roots to an increased possibility of decay and infection. Gingival recession can also lead to tooth loss. Some individuals experience pain or sensitivity in the affected teeth as a result of the exposed root. Early treatment can eliminate the problems caused by receding gums.

One of the most common reasons for gum recession is wear and tear caused by aggressive brushing with a toothbrush that is too hard or stiff. Sometimes lip piercings can also affect the health of gums. Another physical reason causing gums to recede is misalignment of teeth. Gingival recession can also be caused by a reaction of the immune system. Most often this is the result of periodontal disease. Some individuals with thinner gums may also be more susceptible to gum disease.

Some individuals may require a thorough cleaning in order to restore gum health, while others may require more extensive treatment such as surgery and antibiotics to treat infection.
